Choosing an emergency radio: wind-up, solar or DAB+?

What to look for in an emergency radio for UK homes, and which type suits you.

Why a radio is on the official checklist

When the power is out your router stops working and phone batteries run down. The Be Ready campaign recommends a battery or wind-up radio so you can still hear news and updates, and suggests trying both FM and digital stations.

What to look for

  • More than one way to charge: hand crank, solar panel and USB, ideally with a battery you can charge in advance.
  • FM reception as a minimum. DAB+ is a bonus if you also want everyday digital radio.
  • A built-in torch, so one device covers light and information.
  • A USB output to top up a phone in an emergency.
  • Splash resistance if you will keep it in a car, shed or grab bag.

Which one is right for you?

  • For most homes: a compact crank & solar FM radio with torch.
  • For long outages or outdoor use: a larger battery and short-wave.
  • For everyday listening too: a DAB+/FM radio with crank and solar backup.

Tips

  • Charge it fully when it arrives and every few months after that.
  • Write down your local and national station frequencies and keep them with the radio.
  • Keep it where you keep your torch so you can find both in the dark.
